Large Scale Works
In 2012, the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center commissioned artist Julie Clement to paint a unique installation in her signature dot-art style. Venus and Sun—a monumental, 32-by-8-foot wall mural that required six weeks of on-site, nearly nonstop attention—celebrated the June 2012 movement of Venus between the Earth and the Sun, a phenomenal path-crossing of celestial bodies that won’t occur again for more than a hundred years.
Now, for her much-anticipated Manic Botanic exhibition at the Dairy Center for the Arts, Julie takes what she calls “the energetic red tendril” from Venus and Sun and presents her fascinating, colorful interpretations of how the compelling story might continue from there.
After reading news stories about fast-growing phytoplankton in the Arctic and mysterious DNA extracted from Lake Vostok in Antarctica, Julie found herself consumed with vivid imaginings of what might possibly be growing, blooming, and thriving under all that ice. She was further inspired by botanists and other scientists, as well as a diverse collection of lectures, books, and songs.
Arctic Phytoplankton and Life Under the Ice? are Julie’s stunning representations of the North and South Poles. Seagasm portrays the power of the Sun being received into the waters. In Flames of Passion, an orange rose unfolding from the sea signifies the flames of desire and the magnanimous Venusian Love being birthed into the world. Pomegranate, Seeds of Hope, Too Much Cabbage, and other works were divinely guided by the winds of Sophia.
“The vastness of the Universe down to the teeny rocks of an anthill—that’s what stirs my soul to tell a story through my paintings,” Julie says. “And I feel no fear or despair with climate changes. I think that as humanity evolves, we will always be supported by the Seen and Unseen natural world, and my work reflects that.”
